WHAT WE DO

MAGNIFICUS EXPEDITIONS is the commercial wing of

PAPUA BIRD CLUB and uses the power of ecotourism to drive promotion of forest conservation, the protection of birds, and the development of indigenous Papuan communities.

FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE

We are the premier birding tour operator in Indonesian Papua.
We offer tours that enable visitors from all walks of life to enjoy close viewing of birds and other wildlife without disturbance or destructive influence, while at the same time benefitting the local indigenous communities and promoting conservation of their natural resources.

Many of our clients have a non-specific interest in natural history and simply wish to become immersed in the beauty of Papua and enjoy a holiday visit. However, Magnificus Expeditions is also experienced in organizing specialist tours to accommodate the requirements of birdwatchers, naturalists, conservationists and photographers for whom we prepare customized itineraries. Over the past ten years we have had the pleasure of working with such diverse and respected groups as the BBC, National Geographic, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and the United States Ambassador to Indonesia.

SUPPORT OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Central to our philosophy is the  support of local people, whose livelihood depends upon the continued health of their environment. We believe that ecotourism must provide traditional people with resources to improve their lives without degrading their precious natural resources.  Papuan villagers have lived in harmony with their environment for millennia.  One course of action that will help to preserve that environment is to provide guidance as they accommodate to life in a rapidly changing world, without the need to neglect or abandon their traditional values, resources and skills.

As much as we are able, we ensure that our costs are spent locally, distributed fairly and have a positive economic impact, and your participation in a PBC tour demonstrates to villagers that people from the outside world value the ongoing survival of their environment and their customs. The value of the forest, thus demonstrated by the contribution of visitors from elsewhere, affords them secure financial incentives to preserve their traditional way of life.

Community education  programmes are a vital aspect of our work.  We contribute to these financially and with close practical involvement through our non-profit wing PAPUA KONSERVASI DAN KOMUNITAS. Our mission is to prepare the local indigenous communities ultimately to be able to take ownership - both figuratively and literally - of the ecotourism operations themselves.

WE TAKE CARE OF ALL THE DETAILS SO YOU CAN FOCUS ON YOUR EXPERIENCE

We will take care of all arrangements (ground and air transport, food, accomodations, permitting, liaising with the local communities to arrange for guiding, portering, cooking and laundry services, etc.) from the moment we meet you at the airport to the moment you fly back home. All expenses are included in the tour cost except domestic flights, alcoholic beverages, and tips for guides, porters, and other assistants.
